Students are allowed to check out two books for their pleasure. They can check out additional books for Accelerated Reader or classroom reports or projects. Kindergarten students are limited to one book until November, when they are allowed to choose two.
Books are due three weeks after they are checked out, but we recommend returning them each week so that students get in the habit of returning books on time. Also, that allows them access to more books during the year! Although classes are scheduled for library class time for 30-40 minutes each week, individual students are welcome to come to the library every day if they want to!
We believe in the Goldilocks and the Three Bears philosophy: Sometimes a student wants a book that is too hard, but that can challenge their reading or stimulate their imagination or curiosity. That is good. Sometimes they want to read a book that is too soft or too easy. That builds fluency and a love of reading. That is good, too. Sometimes they want one that is just right, with a few words they struggle with--to help them learn--and some that are easy, to keep them interested in the story. And that is good, too.
Damaged books must be returned and reported to the library. Please do not tape them! We will do our best to repair them, but if they cannot be repaired, the student is responsible for replacement cost of the book.
